MC men and women place eighth at Sparky Adams Invitational
New school records set in women's 800m, women 4x100m Relay and men's javelin

Apr. 29, 2006
BEREA, Ohio — Three more school records fell for Head Coach Derek Stanley's Marietta College track & field program Saturday (Apr. 29), when it competed at the Spark Adams Invitational, which was hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College.

Marietta's team fared well overall, as both the men (42 points) and women (28 points) totaled enough points to place eighth in the meet, which included 15 men and 18 women's squads.

Two Pioneers — Jessi Larrison (Batavia) and Mike Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) — continued their record-breaking freshman seasons by topping their own school records Saturday. Larrison lowered her school-record time in the 800m run to 2:16.66 and finished second. Pankowski bettered his school record in the javelin with a throw of 56.55m, which was good enough to win the event.

Marietta's third school record performance came in the women's 4x100m Relay. Sophomores Joanna Ferrell (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South), Marissa Barnhart (Avon), Mallory Sinoski (Fairpoint/St. Clairsville) and Cayli Cummons (Parkersburg, W.Va.) combined to finish the race in 51.71 seconds and placed sixth.

Beyond the three school records, there were other personal records achieved at the meet. Freshman Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren Local) set a new PR in the 800m run (1:57.10) and took fourth. In addition sophomore Harrison Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) set a new PR in the 800m run (2:03.39) and placed 16th. Potter also set a new personal best in the 1,500m run (4:05.44) and finished ninth. Freshman Joseph Wynes (East Aurora, N.Y.) lowered his personal best time in the 3,000m steeplechase and placed tenth. Sophomore John Hull (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) set a new PR in the 5,000m run (15:56.95) and earned an eighth-place finish. Junior Jami Schneider (Portland, Mich./St. Patrick) set a new PR in the 5,000m run (21:43.34) and took 13th. Freshman Leslie Pyle (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) set a new PR in the 400m hurdles (1:09.27) and finished ninth. Junior Fizzy Ramsey (Danville, Ky./Boyle) tied her personal best and school record in the pole vault (3.05m) and tied for 13th. Junior Kelly Rucker (Rocky River) also set a new PR in the javelin (32.09m) and took eighth.

Marietta will return to action Saturday (May 6), when it competes at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State. The following weekend (May 12-13), the Pioneers will host the 2006 Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Don Drumm Stadium.
