Pioneers off to good start at OAC Outdoor Championships
Marietta men fourth, women seventh after first
day

MARIETTA, Ohio — Don Drumm Stadium is the center of Ohio Athletic Conference track & field world this weekend (May 12-13), as the 2006 Outdoor Championships are being held on the campus of Marietta College.
The Pioneers are off to a solid start going into the final day
of competition. Marietta's women set two school records, while the
men had two athletes earn All-OAC honors on day one. The men collected
24 points and sit tied in fourth place, while the women have earned
11 points and are in seventh. Both have already surpassed their
totals from last year's championship.
Mount Union's men (55 points) and Baldwin-Wallace's women (61 points) currently lead the Championships through eight scored events.
Sophomore Mallory Sinoski (Fairpoint/St. Clairsville) reclaimed her school record in the 100m hurdles after losing it last week to one of her teammates. Sinoski finished the race in 15.89 seconds and just missed the finals with a ninth-place finish.
Junior Fizzy Ramsey (Danville, Ky./Boyle) raised her school record mark in the pole vault to 10-04.00 (3.15m) and took fourth.
Junior Rachel Forman (Heath) captured first place in the hammer throw, which is an exhibition event at the championships. Forman's winning mark was 136-05 (41.5m).
Other personal records on the women's side included Alecia Benninger (Akron/Springfield) in the discus (10th/112-01), Rachelle Cole (Sherrodsville/Conotton Valley) in the javelin (5th/109-01) and Marissa Barnhart (Avon) in the javelin (7th/105-01).
Sophomore Dan DeZordo (Louisville/Marlington) and freshman Mike Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) each earned All-OAC honors with a top-three finish in an event Friday. DeZordo took second place in the discus (152-09), while Pankowski placed third in the javelin (171-09).
Personal records were set by sophomore John Hull (Scot Depot, W.Va./Winfield) in the 10000m run (10th/33:40.41), senior Chad Showen (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) in the pole vault (7th/14-01.25), DeZordo in the hammer throw (7th/132-02), freshman Kevin Cox (Belpre) in the hammer throw (10th/118-02) and freshman Jason Cocca (Middleburg Heights,/Midpark) in the javelin (160-07).
Action concludes Saturday, when 24 more individual champions are crowned. The Field events are slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the running events scheduled to start at 1:40 p.m. |
