MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field program split up its squad this weekend (March 23-24), sending a portion of the team to compete at the Wake Forest Invitational and the rest of the athletes to the Muskingum Invitational.

The Wake Forest Open, a two-day event, featured over 50 colleges and universities. Marietta had eight athletes qualify for the meet, which was not scored.

Sophomore Derek Carpenter (Belpre) had the highlight of the meet for the Pioneers. He set a school record with his 24th place finish in the hammer throw (143-08/43.79m). Carpenter’s mark surpassed Eric Finn’s throw of 143-04 (43.68m) in 2005. Carpenter also placed 31st in the shot put (39-03.25/11.97m).

In addition, Sophomore Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren Local) took 74th in the 800m run (1:59.88) and 88th in the 1,500m run (4:17.50). Junior John Hull (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) placed 38th in the 10,000m run (34:37.72). Freshman Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) was 47th in the high jump (6-02.75/1.90m). Junior Dan DeZordo (Louisville/Marlington) placed 27th in the shot put (44-00.50/13.42m) and 13th in the discus (148-04/45.22m).

Sophomore Jessi Larrison (Batavia) took 56th in the 800m run (2:21.97) and 58th in 1,500m run (5:01.47). Senior Rachel Forman (Heath) placed 30th in the hammer throw (128-05/39.14m). Senior Fizzy Ramsey (Danville, Ky./Boyle) competed in the pole vault but did not clear a height.

The Muskingum Invite took place Saturday afternoon and featured 14 men’s programs and 12 women’s teams. The Pioneer women collected 30.5 points to place eighth, while the men earned 15.0 points to take 11th.

Marietta had five top-five finishers at the event. Sophomore Melissa Schulte (Pemberville/Eastwood) placed third in the triple jump (32-11.25/10.04m) and fourth in the long jump (15-07.50/4.76m). Freshman Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) took third in the women's 1,500m run (5:02.24). In addition, freshman Josh Mickle (Madison) placed fourth in the men's 1,500m run (4:08.90).
