Marietta's Robertson breaks women's 5k record at Don Frail Invitational
Pioneer women take second and men third

Apr. 6, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College freshman Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) dodged snow flurries en route to setting a school and meet record in the 5,000m run at Friday (Apr. 6) evening's Don Frail Invitational at Don Drumm Stadium.

Nine schools braved the elements on the campus of Marietta College to compete at the Don Frail Invitational, which was reborn after a 17-year absence. The meet, formerly known as the Don Frail Memorial Relays, was held from 1973-1990 in honor of its former coach that lost a battle with cancer in 1972. Head Coach Derek Stanley has worked to bring back the competition to carry on its tradition.

Tiffin University swept the invitational, which featured representatives from all three divisions of NCAA track & field. The Dragon women collected 217.50 points, while the men compiled 295 points. Marietta's women (141.50) and Robert Morris (115) finished second and third, respectively. The two schools swapped spots in the men's competition with Robert Morris (111) taking second and Marietta (94) placing third.

Robertson had the performance of the night for Marietta. She won the 5,000m run with an All-Ohio and OAC Championship-qualifying time of 18:43.22. The mark also broke the school and meet record. Dorrie Harris held the previous school record with a time of 19:20.0, while the old Frail Relay record, 19:38.9, was set by a Cedarville runner in 1987.

In addition to Robertson's first place finish, Marietta's women also had eight Top 3 finishes. Freshman Logan Wern (North Canton/Hoover) took third in both the 800m run (2:35.67) and the 1,500m run (5:13.61). Sophomore Jessi Larrison (Batavia) finished third in the 5,000m run (20:56.00). Junior Breanne Kosar (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) placed second in the high jump (5-01.00/1.55m). Senior Fizzy Ramsey (Danville, Ky./Boyle) and freshman Jen Valentic (Medina/Highland) tied for second in the pole vault (9-00.25/2.75m). Sophomore Melissa Schulte (Pemberville/Eastwood) finished second in the triple jump (33-10.00/10.31m). Senior Rachel Forman (Heath) took second in the hammer throw (134-08/41.06m).

The Pioneer men also had one individual champion and five other Top 3 finishers Friday. Junior Dan DeZordo (Louisville/Marlington) won the discus throw with a mark of 151-00 (46.02m). Freshman Josh Mickle (Madison) took second in the 800m run (2:20.25). Junior Harrison Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) was second in the 1,500m run (4:16.29). Freshman Cody Thomas (North Olmsted) placed second in the 3,000m Steeplechase (10:54.02). Freshman Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) finished second in the high jump (6-01.50/1.87m) and third in the triple jump (39-10.75 (12.16m).

Marietta returns to action Tuesday (Apr. 10) when it visits rival Muskingum for a Dual Meet. On Saturday (Apr. 14), those Pioneers that qualified will compete at the All-Ohio Championships, which are being hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.
