| Marietta men's track & field wins Green & White Invitational
Lady Pioneer finish fifth at meet

ATHENS, Ohio — The Marietta College Track & Field program traveled to Ohio University on Saturday (May 3) afternoon to compete in the Green & White Invitational. The Pioneer men had three individual champions and outscored eight other teams to win the competition with 110 points. Marietta’s women set two school records and finished fifth among the eight schools with 50 points.
Junior Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren Local) won the 800m Run with a time of 1:57.00. Freshman Justin Floyd (Redford, Mich./Redford Union) claimed the High Jump title after leaping 1.78m. Freshman Anthony Williams (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) won the 400m Dash, crossing the line in 51.27 seconds. In addition to the three champions, Marietta’s men had a trio of runner-up finishes on Saturday. Freshman Matt Hickman (St. Marys, W.Va.) took second in the 100m Dash after finishing in 10.91 seconds. Junior Derek Carpenter (Belpre) placed second in the Hammer Throw with a mark of 47.30m.
Sophomore Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) was the lone Lady Pioneer to win her event as she took first place in the 3,000m Steeplechase with a school record time of 11:58.86. Freshman Tara Leach (West Lafayette) also set a school record on Saturday when she placed third in the 100m Dash with a time of 12.91 seconds. Freshman Olivia Holiday (Malta/Morgan) and junior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) also placed in the top three in their respective events. Holiday took second in the Pole Vault by clearing a mark of 3.25m, while Larrison took third in the 800m Run after crossing the line in 2:25.20.
Saturday was the final meet of the year in which the whole team will compete. Select student-athletes, who are close to provisionally qualifying for the upcoming NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship, will continue to travel to qualifying meets. The first of those meets is the North Carolina Invitational, which will take place on Friday (May 9) in Chapel Hill, N.C. Marietta will then travel to the Ohio Open on Saturday (May 10) in Athens, Ohio. |
