Dec. 6, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field season officially got underway on Saturday (Dec. 6) afternoon when the Pioneers hosted their non-scoring First Glimpse Meet inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center (DBRC). [Results]
Head Coach Derek Stanley’s student-athletes set a pair of school records and came very close to another at the meet, which also featured Concord University from Athens, West Virginia, as well as members of the Emory & Henry track club and other unattached participants.
“Overall, this was a good meet for December,” Stanley said. “There is a lot of potential on both the men and women’s squad and it brings a feeling of excitement when I think about what we may be able to accomplish later this season.”
Freshman Brittany Sims (Columbus/Eastmoor Academy) set a new school record in the prelims of the 55m Dash. Sims crossed the line first in 7.36 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 7.73 seconds, which was set by Tara Leach last season. She went on to win the finals with a time of 7.39 seconds.
Sophomore Anthony Williams (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) broke his own school record in the 200m Dash on Saturday. Williams, who won the race, lowered his career-best time from 23.63 seconds to 23.48 seconds in the event.
The women’s 4x400m Relay team came just shy of the Pioneers’ school record of 4:13.44. Freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic), Sims, freshman Christina Tirpak (Galena/Olentangy) and senior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) combined to win the race in 4:13.75.
Senior Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) swept the Weight Throw and the Shot Put on Saturday. In both events, Kovacevich, the school record holder, had her second-best indoor marks of her career. She threw the shot 11.78m (38-07.75) and the weight 13.68m (44-10.75).
Sophomore Stephanie Hammond (Toledo/Central Catholic) set a personal record in the Shot Put, taking second with a mark of 9.87m (32-07.75).
Other highlights came from sophomore Matt Hickman (St. Mary’s, W.Va.) and freshman Ryan Householder (Frazeysburg/Tri-Valley). Hickman tied the third fastest time of his career, 6.68 seconds, in the 55m Dash and took second. Householder, who won the prelims of the 55m Dash in 6.72 seconds, ran the second fastest freshman time since Coach Stanley has been at Marietta.
Marietta will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon when the Pioneers host the Marietta Open #1, the second of five home indoor meets at the DBRC. |
