MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior thrower Brian Pallini (Medina) and freshman distance runner Jennifer Emmert (Martinsburg, W.Va.) set new Pioneer records in the first field event and running event, respectively, to set the tone for a successful Marietta Open #1 on Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The Pioneer women captured first place with 185 points, while the Pioneer men finished runner-up after collecting 145 points. [Results]
In all, six Marietta records fell at the meet, which marked the Pioneers’ return to action after the semester break and included nine men’s squads and eight women’s teams. Marietta had individual champions in 18 events—10 on the women’s side and eight on the men’s side.
“We won a lot of events today and scored a ton of points,” Head Coach Derek Stanley said. “This was a great way to rebound from winter break and set the bar for the season.”
Pallini swept the men’s throwing events on Saturday. He won the Weight Throw with a school record mark of 16.01m (52-06.50) and then took the Shot Put crown with a mark of 14.64m (48-00.50).
Emmert captured the 5,000m Run win after crossing the line in a school record 19:33.23.
Freshman sprinter Brittany Sims (Columbus/Eastmoor Academy) added the 200m record to her resume after setting the 55m Dash record at the team’s initial meet of the year. Sims, who won the event, finished in 27.61 seconds, which was more than one second faster than the previous school record.
Senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg) lowered her own record in the 400m Dash on Saturday. The captain crossed the line in 1.00.75 to pull out the narrow win.
Sims, Spencer, freshman Christina Tirpak (Galena/Olentangy) and junior Christi Tims (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) combined to win the 4x200m Relay with a school-record performance. The ladies pieced together a time of 1:50.45, shaving nearly one-half second off the old mark.
Marietta’s sixth record actually tied an old mark. Freshman Kim Keesler (Chagrin Falls) matched former Pioneer standout and current team Athletic Trainer Fizzy Ramsey’s school record in winning the Pole Vault. Keesler cleared 3.20m (10-06.00) on Saturday.
Saturday brought about a first for the Pioneers as both of their 4x200m Relays and 4x400m Relays captured first place finishes at the same event.
The Pioneers also had some other notable performance. Junior Cody Thomas (North Olmsted) won the Mile Run and cut 22 seconds off his fastest indoor time. He finished in 4:33.05. Freshman Andy Guimond (Marietta) beat his personal record in the 3,000m Run by 20 seconds after crossing the line in third place (9:49.76). Freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) won the 300m Dash, finishing in 46.06 seconds. It was the first time that she ran the event. In addition, freshman Ashley Bault (Atwater/Waterloo) finished runner-up in the Long Jump after leaping 5.05m (16-07.00). She also took second place in the High Jump after clearing 1.49m (4-10.50).
