Marietta track & field competes well at its Alumni Meet
Four more school records fall on Friday

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team hosted its fourth indoor meet of the 2008-09 season when 11 schools joined the Pioneers for the annual Marietta Alumni Meet on Friday (Feb. 6) at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.

The Pioneer men racked up 129 points to place third overall behind West Virginia Wesleyan, which had 187.50 points, and Robert Morris (Pa.), which totaled 160 points. Marietta’s women took fourth place with 80.50 points. Ohio won the women’s side with 261 points, while Robert Morris (Pa.) finished second with 126 points and Marshall (W.Va.) placed third with 99 points. [Results]

Head Coach Derek Stanley’s Marietta squad set four school records at the event. In addition to the four school records, five more Marietta student-athletes qualified for the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Championship, which will take place at Capital University March 6-7.

Senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg) lowered her own record mark en route to winning the 300m Dash. Spencer crossed the line in 42.33 seconds, which met the A Standard for the OAC Championship.

Freshman Kim Keesler (Chagrin Falls) topped the previous school record in the Pole Vault by clearing 3.35m (10-11.75), which placed her second in the competition. Keesler and former Pioneer Fizzy Ramsey shared the old mark of 3.20m (10-06.00).

Freshman sprinter Ryan Householder (Frazeysburg/Tri-Valley) improved upon his own school record in the 200m Dash. Householder finished third in the event after crossing the line in 23.6 seconds, breaking his previous mark of 24.32 seconds.

Sophomore thrower Stephanie Hammond (Toledo/Central Catholic) broke her teammate Tiffany Kovacevich’s (Strongsville) school record in the Weight Throw. Hammond put together a throw of 14.41m (47-03.50), which was good for fifth place.

Senior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) won the 800m Run and met the A Standard for the OAC Championship. Larrison crossed the line in a season-best 2:22.29.

Junior Cody Thomas (North Olmsted) also met the OAC’s A Standard in the men’s 800m Run. Thomas won the race in a personal record 2:00.27.

Freshman Brittany Sims (Columbus/Eastmoor Academy) eclipsed the OAC’s B Standard in her first time running the 400m Dash. Sims placed fifth after crossing the line in 1:03.49.

Junior Josh Mickle (Madison) met the OAC’s B Standard in the Mile Run. He took third place after completing the race in 4:33.19.

Another noteworthy performance came from freshman Jayshon Irvin (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian), who won the 55m Dash with a time of 6.53 seconds.

Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Feb. 14) when the Pioneers compete at the All-Ohio Championship, hosted by Otterbein College. Action is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
