Gay and Irvin selected to represent Marietta at 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship
Three-day event will begin May 21 in Marietta, Ohio

MARIETTA, Ohio — On Sunday (May 17) afternoon, the NCAA Selection Committee announced the participants in the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will take place May 21-23 in Marietta, Ohio.

Local fans will have two Pioneers to cheer for during the three-day event, which will feature 688 student-athletes from over 100 institutions. Sophomore Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) will participate in the High Jump, while freshman Jayshon Irvin (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian) will compete in the 100m Dash.

Gay’s latest performance helped him make the 18-person field in the High Jump, which will take place Saturday (May 23) at 11:30 a.m. After provisionally qualifying for the event with a mark of 2.02m (6-07.50) at the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Gold Meet on March 28, Gay jumped up to a tie for 10th on the provisional list when he cleared 2.05m (6-08.75) at the Gregory Invitational on May 15.

Irvin’s provisional qualifying mark in the 100m Dash came at the All-Ohio Championship on April 11. He won the event with a school record performance of 10.71 seconds. Irvin is tied for 11th place among the 21 sprinters in the field. Prelims of the 100m Dash are slated for Friday (May 22) at 4:10 p.m. The finals will take place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Student-athletes and coaches will begin to descend upon Marietta College Monday (May 18) afternoon. The competition facilities will be open for practice on Tuesday (May 19) and Wednesday (May 20). The Championship Banquet is scheduled for Wednesday evening inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center at 6:30 p.m. The NCAA Championship will officially begin on Thursday (May 21) with the Decathlon 100m Dash at 12 p.m. [Schedule]

Official members of the travel party will be admitted free of charge to the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Additional passes for coaches and administrators can be purchased during packet pickup. Other individuals may purchase tickets at the Don Drumm Stadium ticket office. Tickets can be purchased with Cash only. Ticket sales begin at 9 a.m. on each day of the championships.
