Denison defeats Marietta in semifinal of 14th annual River City Volleyball Tournament
Carnegie Mellon wins championship

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College volleyball team went 1-1 on the second day (Sept. 4) of the 14th annual River City Volleyball Tournament. The Pioneers (2-2) defeated Washington & Jefferson (PA) to earn the top seed in the championship bracket, but lost in three games to Denison in the semifinal. Carnegie Mellon (PA) took home the tournament title with a four-game victory of the Big Red.

Marietta defeated Washington & Jefferson in three games, 30-22, 32-30, 30-23, to finish 2-1 in the pool play portion of the tournament.

Ellen Doolittle (Louisville, KY/DuPont Manual) finished with a team-high 13 kills and five blocks in the win over the Presidents.

Paige Burton (Fairlawn/Akron Hoban) collected 34 assists and Jessica Craig (Uniontown/Lake) had 17 digs.

The Pioneers hoped to carry the momentum from the morning's victory into the semifinal match-up with Denison, but the Big Red controlled the match from the start and advanced to the finals with 30-16, 30-18, 30-14 victory.

Burton finished with 22 assists in the loss. Ashley Webster (West Chester/Ursuline Academy) collected a team-high 20 digs and eight kills. Webster earned All-Tournament Team honors for her play this weekend.

Marietta returns to action Tuesday (Sept. 7) when they travel to Urbana for a 7 p.m. match.

Carnegie Mellon, who defeated Wooster in the other semifinal won the championship in four games.
