Kenyon Ladies outlast Pioneers; MC volleyball falls 3-2
Sept. 14, 2004
MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College volleyball team entered tonight's contest (Sept. 14) with visiting Kenyon hoping to carry over the momentum from its two straight victories to end the Kilt Classic over the weekend. The Pioneers however, could not put together back-to-back consistent games and Kenyon escaped with a 3-2 victory.
The Pioneers (5-6) breezed through the first game, winning 30-16, but fell almost as easy, 30-13, in game two. MC looked as if it was refocused following a 30-25 game three victory, but Kenyon (4-6) was able to take advantage of Pioneer mental errors and take the next two games, 30-26 and 15-13, to win the match.
Freshman Paige Williams (Richmond, IN) played solid at the net tonight, finishing with a team-high 16 kills. She also added two block assists.
Senior tri-captain Ashley Webster (West Chester/Ursuline Academy) added 12 kills and 28 digs for the Pioneers, who played their first five-game match of the season.
Sophomore setter Paige Burton (Fairlawn/Akron Hoban) collected 46 assists and senior tri-captain Jennie Hayden (Powell/Olentangy) finished with seven kills and and 18 digs in the loss.
The Pioneers once again took the floor with out sophomores Ellen Doolittle (Louisville, KY/DuPont Manual) and Jaymi Stephens (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) who are battling early season injuries.
Marietta returns to action Saturday (Sept. 18) when they host Heidelberg and Pitt-Greensburg in a tri-match. The Pioneers and the Student Princes will start things off with an OAC match-up at 12 p.m. Heidelberg will then play Pitt-Greensburg at 2 p.m. , with MC at UP-G closing things out against each other at 4 p.m. All action will take place on Fenton Court in Ban Johnson Arena.
