Pioneer volleyball drops OAC opener to Heidelberg 3-0
Sept. 18, 2004
MARIETTA, Ohio - The inclement weather did not stop the Marietta College volleyball team from hosting Heidelberg College today (Sept. 18) for its Ohio Athletic Conference opener.
The match, which was scheduled to be one-third of a tri-match between the Student Princes, Pitt-Greensburg and the Pioneers, lasted just three games, as Heidelberg won 30-14, 30-25, 30-26 on Fenton Court.
Heidelberg (7-5, 1-1 OAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game one and Marietta (5-7, 0-1 OAC) could never recover, falling 30-14. The Pioneers battled over the next two games, but Heidelberg pulled out 30-25 and 30-26 wins to pick up its first OAC victory of the year.
Ashley Webster (West Chester/Ursuline Academy) led MC with seven kills and 10 digs in the loss.
Jennie Hayden (Powell/Olentangy) and Jaymi Stephens (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) each added six kills for the Pioneers.
Sophomore setter Paige Burton (Fairlawn/Akron Hoban) finished with 27 assists in the match.
Heidelberg took on Pitt-Greensburg in the second match of the day, but it was halted after the first game due to increasing concerns over the weather in Marietta. The match between the Lady Bobcats and the Pioneers was also cancelled.
Marietta is scheduled to return to action Tuesday (Sept. 21) when they host Muskingum at 7 p.m.
