Slide continues for MC volleyball

CLARION, Pa. The Marietta College volleyball teams
winless streak hit 10 matches this weekend (Oct. 2-3), as it dropped
all four contests at the 2004 Holiday Inn Tournament, hosted by
Clarion University.
The Pioneers (5-15) opened the tournament with a 30-27, 30-20,
30-20 loss to coach Tom Symons alma mater Slippery
Rock Friday afternoon. Marietta then fell in five games to Alderson-Broaddus
(30-13, 29-31, 30-28, 25-30, 15-13) in its second match Friday night.
The final match of pool play had the Pioneers matched up with Mt.
Olive (NC). Marietta won the first game 31-29, but could not keep
the momentum, falling 30-26, 30-27 and 30-20 in the final three
games. MCs 0-3 record in pool play forced them to play top
seed Clarion in the quarterfinals. Clarion controlled the match
in route to a 30-11, 30-9, 30-18, to advance into the semi finals.
Senior Ashley Webster (West Chester/Ursuline Academy) finished
the weekend with 15 kills, 65 digs and 3 aces, earning All-Tournament
team.
Sophomore Ellen Doolittle (Louisville, KY/DuPont Manual)
led the offense with 38 kills in the four matches. She and junior
Shannon Weber (Mayfield Hts./Mayfield) each added 18 blocks
for the Pioneers.
Mariettas setter Paige Burton (Fairlawn/Akron Hoban)
collected 111 assists and 37 digs over the weekend, while Jennie
Hayden (Powell/Olentangy) (17 kills and 11 blocks) and Jaymi
Stevens (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) (34 kills and six aces)
each made solid contributions for Marietta.
The Pioneers will dive back into OAC play Tuesday (Oct. 5) when
they visit Wilmington for a 7 p.m. match with the Quakers.
