Search for a replacement will get underway in coming weeks
Jan. 12, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — After three seasons as Marietta College's volleyball coach,
Tom Symons announced his resignation from the school's athletic department Friday (Jan. 12) morning, according to Athletics Director, Debbie Lazorik.
"The team was notified Wednesday evening," said Lazorik. "We wish Tom well and thank him for the good work that he has done with our volleyball program and for his leadership in developing the sports management program. We expect to begin the search for a replacement in the coming weeks."
Symons, who also took on the role as the chairman of the physical education department and as the compliance director this past fall, is leaving the coaching ranks to pursue a new opportunity outside of athletics.
Symons went 35-46 in his three seasons with the Pioneer volleyball team. In 2006, he guided Marietta to a 20-8 record, setting a new standard in the program for regular season winning percentage (.741). As a team, Marietta finished the year with the second-most solo blocks (163), the third-most blocks assists (282) and the fourth-most service aces (236) in school history.
Before joining Marietta, Symons, a 1997 graduate of Slippery Rocky, spent three years as the head coach of Nebraska Wesleyan. Symons also spent two seasons as the assistant volleyball coach at Northwestern State prior to his hiring at Nebraska Wesleyan.
Marietta, which recently released its 2007 schedule, will open next fall at home with the 17th annual River City Volleyball Tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
The Pioneers are also scheduled to compete at tournaments in Defiance and York (Pa.) before jumping into the bulk of their Ohio Athletic Conference schedule. |
