Marietta volleyball drops 3-1 decision to host Otterbein
Pioneers will host Muskingum Tuesday in Dig For the Cure match at 7 p.m.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 25-22) on the road to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe and host Otterbein College Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon. The Pioneers dropped their record to 12-9, 0-2 in the OAC. The Cardinals improved to 6-14, 1-1 in league play.

Freshman outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) led Marietta's offensive attack with 13 kills, while freshman right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls) added nine kills and sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) had eight kills in the match. Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) dished out 32 assists in the loss.

Junior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted), who also added three service aces, and senior defensive specialist Brittany Papili (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) both collected 16 digs, while Weissling added 10 digs and senior middle blocker Sarah Vadaj (Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt) had nine digs to pace the defense. The Pioneers' defense also finished with 10 total blocks, led by freshman middle blocker Jessie Blackley (Aurora) with one solo block and four assisted blocks. Vadaj, Storey and Shirk also contributed three block assists in the match.

Marietta will return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 7) night when rival Muskingum College visits Ban Johnson Arena for a 7 p.m. OAC match-up. The two teams will participate in Dig For the Cure. The Pioneers have set a goal to raise of $5,000 this season after raising over $4,000 in 2007. The first 200 fans through the gate will receive a free t-shirt and everyone is encouraged to wear pink to show their support for the fight against breast cancer.
