Marietta volleyball falls 3-1 to visiting Baldwin-Wallace on Senior Day
Pioneers visit Capital Tuesday at 7 p.m.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team closed out the home portion of its 2008 schedule with a 3-1 loss to visiting Baldwin-Wallace College on Senior Day Saturday (Oct. 18) afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena. The Yellow Jackets won 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22 to improve to 10-16 overall and 1-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fell to 13-13, 1-5 in league play.
Before the match, Marietta recognized it four seniors—defensive specialist Brittany Papili (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth), setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), middle blocker Sarah Vadaj (Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt) and defensive specialist Emily Wheatley (Wyoming).
The Pioneers' offense had three players finish with double-digit kills on Saturday. Freshman outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) had a team-best 15 kills and two service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) added 13 kills, and freshman middle blocker Jessie Blackley (Aurora) had 10 kills. Shirk finished with 45 assists to increase her career total to 2,740 assists, which ranks third all-time at Marietta.
Baldwin-Wallace was led offensively by Maria DePeters with a match-high 19 kills and Chelsea Nissen with 10 kills. In addition, setter Casey Passen had 43 assists and Kayli Tyson added four service aces.
Marietta's defense was paced by junior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) with 24 digs. Holzworth was one of six Pioneers to have at least 10 digs. Weissling had 18 digs, Shirk contributed 16 digs, Papili finished with 15 digs, junior defensive specialist Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind.) made 14 digs and Vadaj had 10 digs. Vadaj also led the team with three total blocks, while Blackley and Schoener both added two total blocks.
The Yellow Jacket defense was led by Lissy Grame with 24 digs, while Nissen added 22 digs, Passen had 15 digs and Nicole Schoen finished with 11 digs. In addition, DePeters assisted the defense with three total blocks and Nissen added two total blocks.
Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 21) night when the Pioneers visit Columbus for a 7 p.m. OAC match-up with Capital University. |
