Marietta volleyball closes out season with 3-1 loss to John Carroll
Pioneers set five single-season team records in 2008

The Marietta College volleyball team closed out its 2008 season with a 3-1 loss to host John Carroll University Friday (Oct. 31) night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. The Blue Streaks won 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-13 to improve to 18-11 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers finished the year 16-17 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Marietta set five single-season records in 2008. In their 34-year history, the Pioneers ranked third with 1,487 kills, fifth with 4,343 attacks, second with 1,382 assists, third with 278 blocks assists and third with 280 service aces.
On Friday, senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) dished out 40 assists to increase her season total to 1,125, which ranks third in single-season school history. She also finished her career with 2,986 assists, which also ranks third all-time.
Freshman Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) led the team with 15 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) added 11 kills in the match. Weissling also contributed a team-best four service aces.
Defensively, junior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) finished with 20 digs to set a new single-season school record with 666 digs on the year. Holzworth also ranks four all-time in digs per game in a season as she averaged 5.37 in 2008. Weissling also helped the defense against the Blue Streaks with 13 digs. Freshman middle hitter Jessie Blackley (Aurora) added a match-high seven total blocks in the loss. |
