Bakos drops 22 in Lady Pioneers'
season opener
Marietta defeats Waynesburg
51-47, will play host Allegheny (PA) in Championship tomorrow at
3 p.m.

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Second year Head Coach Vicki Giffin and
the Lady Pioneers opened the 2004-05 season with a 51-47 victory
over Waynesburg (PA) in the first round of the National City Tip-off
Classic, hosted by Allegheny (PA) College.
Senior Beth Bakos (Clayton/Northmont) led the
way with a game-high 22 points, finishing 7-of-10 from the floor,
including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. The forward connected on 5-of-8
from the charity stripe in the win. Bakos also added nine boards.
Marietta also got 11 points and six rebounds from
fellow senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover), while
sophomore Lindsey Marx (Athens) added seven in her Pioneer
debut.
Freshman Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, MD/Southern
Garrett) scored five points and Olivia Newsome (Jumping Branch,
WV/Summers) had six rebounds in their first game as Pioneers.
The Pioneers never trailed in the contest, after opening
with a 9-0 run. Marietta extended its lead to as many as 13, before
entering the locker room with a 30-20 lead. Waynesburg battled back
in the second half, cutting the lead to two points, 47-45, with
1:10 to play in the game. The Navy Blue & White closed the door
on the Yellow Jackets with four free throws in the final minute
to hold onto the 51-47 victory.
Marietta shot 18-of-41 (43.9%) from the field, 3-of-6
(50.0%) from three-point range and 12-of-24 (50.0%) from the line.
Waynesburg finished 19-of-66 (28.8%) from the floor, including 9-of-35
(25.7%) from long range. They did not attempt a free throw in the
loss.
Bree Williams led the Yellow Jackets with nine
points, while Trista Murphy added six points and nine rebounds
before fouling out late in the second half.
The victory sets up a championship battle with host
Allegheny, who advanced with a win over Alfred (NY). Tip-off is
slated for 3 p.m.
