Jan. 5, 2005
NEW CONCORD, Ohio - The Marietta College women's basketball team began the New Year with a 55-45 road victory over rival Muskingum Wednesday (Jan. 5). The win snapped a five game losing streak, gave MC its first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win and improved its record to 3-7 overall.
The Pioneers took their first lead, 19-18, with 8:50 to play in the half and closed the period on a 15-4 run to take the 28-22 advantage at intermission, thanks in part to 12-of-22 (54.5%) shooting in the half and 12 points from senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover).
Muskingum (2-9, 1-4 OAC) cut MC's lead to one at 36-35, but Moriarty's lone jumper of the half swung the momentum back in favor of Marietta and the Pioneers held on for the 10-point win. MC was able to seal the win by knocking down 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch.
MC shot 20-of-46 (43.5%) from the field for the game, while Muskingum finished just 17-of-68 (25.0%) from the floor.
Moriarty led Marietta with 14 points. Seniors Heather Bowman (Greenville) and Rebecca Tokodi (Marietta/Parkersburg Catholic WV)) each finished with 12 and freshman Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, MD/Southern Garrett) added 10. Tokodi also added seven boards. Freshman Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) had a big night on the boards, pulling down a career-high 15 in the win.
Leslie Kimble paced Muskingum with 10 points and Renee Thatcher added nine in the loss.
Marietta will look to stay unbeaten in 2005 when it hosts John Carroll Saturday (Jan. 8) at 3 p.m. The Blue Streaks are coming off a 60-57 upset of No. 2 Capital Wednesday (Jan. 5). |
