MC can't overcome early deficit, JCU holds on for 68-59 victory in women's basketball
Jan. 8, 2005
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - Adapting to uncontrollable circumstances is something every one must endure from time to time. For the Lady Pioneer basketball team, it meant playing its ninth game of the season away from the friendly confines of Fenton Court. The Pioneers have only had two home games thus far in 2004-05, after Saturday's game with the Blue Streaks was moved to University Heights, as a result of Marietta's most recent flood.
John Carroll (6-5, 3-3 OAC) jumped out to a 9-0 lead over Marietta (3-8, 1-5 OAC) by holding the Pioneers scoreless until a lay up by freshman Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, MD/Southern Garrett) finally put MC on the board with 14:24 to play in the half. Marietta's shooting woes continued through the first half, allowing John Carroll to build a 35-19 half time lead.
The Pioneers fought back to open the second frame with a 15-4 run to pull with in five, 39-34, but the Blue Streaks would not the them get any closer and held on for the 68-59 victory.
Marietta, who shot 22-of-53 (41.5%) from the floor, was led by seniors Beth Bakos (Clayton/Northmont) and Rebecca Tokodi (Marietta/Parkersburg Catholic) with 13 points and seven boards and 12 points and eight boards, respectively. Pagenhardt and junior Tabi Taylor (New Matamoras/Frontier) each added nine in the loss.
John Carroll was paced by Shayla Bell with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Mary Hladky (11) and Meagan Heller (10) each finished in double figures.
As a result of the location switch, on Saturday (Jan. 22) MC will host JCU in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Fenton Court. Game times have not yet been finalized.
The Navy Blue & White will return to Fenton Court Wednesday (Jan. 12) to host Mount Union. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. |

Senior Rebecca Tokodi had 12 points and eight boards against JCU
