Lady Pioneers fall on the road to Otterbein 80-57

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - An almost six minute scoring drought in the second half prevented Marietta from sweeping the season series with Otterbein, as the Cardinals sailed to an 80-57 home victory Wednesday night (Feb. 2).
The Pioneers (7-12, 5-8 OAC) trailed by just three at intermission, 26-23, and were down 31-28 2:30 into the second stanza. Marietta, however would not makes its next bucket until freshman Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, MD/Southern Garrett) hit a jumped at the 11:54 mark. Otterbein was able to go on a 17-0 run over that period to put the outcome out of doubt; the Cardinals kept it a double-digit lead for the rest of the game and came away with the ninth win in their last 10 games. Marietta was the only team to knock them off over that 10-game span.
Pagenhardt led the Pioneers with 17 points and five boards, while fellow freshman Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) played extended minutes off the bench and finished with a career-high 16 points, while pulling down a game-high nine boards.
Otterbein's Danielle Holbrookfinished with a career-high 32 points and Michelle Keeney added 12 points in the win. Abbey Perez dished out nine assist as well.
MC went 24-of-62 (38.75) from the floor, while Otterbein finished 30-of-62 (48.4%) from the field. The Cardinals out rebounded the Pioneers 43-32 and made 11 more from the charity stripe in the victory.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back from its second straight loss Saturday (Feb. 5) when it plays host to Heidelberg at 1 p.m. on Fenton Court. |
