Defense leads Lady Pioneers to 58-42 victory over Heidelberg

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Lady Pioneers combined strong defense and timely scoring to defeat Heidelberg 58-42 Saturday (Feb. 5) in the first game of a Winter Weekend doubleheader on Fenton Court. With the win, Marietta improved to 8-12 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. Heidelberg fell to 11-10 overall and 5-9 in the Conference.
Marietta trailed by as many as six early in the game Saturday and entered intermission behind 28-24. The Lady Pioneers took the lead for good when senior Beth Bakos (Clayton/Northmont) scored a lay-up to give MC a 37-36 advantage. That bucket sparked a 23-6 run to close out the game in favor of the Lady Pioneers.
Senior Rebecca Tokodoi (Marietta/Parkersburg, WV) led MC in scoring with 14 points, while adding 14 boards. Fellow senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) scored 11 points. Senior Heather Bowman (Greenville) and freshmen Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, MD/Southern Garrett) and Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) each added eight in the win.
Heidelberg was paced by Amanda Campbell with 17 points, while Stephanie Tanner added seven in the loss.
Marietta went 22-of-52 (42.3%) from the field in the win, while Heidelberg shot 16-of-55 (29.1%) in the loss. The Pioneers finished with 43 rebounds, 16 assists and nine steals, while the Student Princes finished with 32 boards and 19 turnovers.
The Pioneers will look to make it two in a row when they play host to Muskingum Wednesday (Feb. 9) at 7:30 p.m. |
