Lady Pioneers end regular season with 76-60 loss to Wilmington

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale to Wilmington Saturday (Feb. 19) by the score of 76-60 on Senior Day in Ban Johnson Arena. The win improved the reigning National Champions' record to 21-4 overall, 16-2 in the OAC, while Marietta finished the regular season in fifth place, 10-14 overall, 8-10 in league play.
Marietta led 4-0 on jumpers by senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) and freshman Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, MD/Southern Garrett). A three-pointer by Courtney Balser sparked an 11-0 run that Wilmington never relinquished.
The Quakers extended their lead to 18 at the break, 41-23, and then later to as many as 24 in the second frame, before Marietta made a late run to bring the final score to 76-60 in favor of Wilmington.
The Pioneers finished the game 24-of-64 (37.5%) from the floor and 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the line. Wilmington converted 30-of-66 (45.5%) from the field and 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the charity stripe. The Quakers also hit five three-pointers, while MC made four and they controlled the boards 46-36.
Pagenhardt scored a game-high 24 points, hitting 9-of-19 overall, including 4-of-6 from long range. She also made 2-of-4 from the line. Senior Rebecca Tokodi (Marietta/Parkersburg Catholic, WV) added nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while senior teammates Moriarty and Heather Bowman (Greenville) finished with eight points in the loss.
Wilmington had four players finish in double figures and were led by its senior Siobhan Zerilla with 15 points, seven steals, five assists and 11 boards. The other Quakers in double digits were Erica Smith (13), Kelly Peters (11) and Shawna Thomas (10). Peters added eight rebounds.
Marietta earned the No. 5 seed in the OAC Tournament and it will travel to Columbus Tuesday (Feb. 22) to take on No. 4 seed Capital at 7:30 p.m. |
