Turnovers costly in Lady Pioneers' 62-41 loss to No. 6 Capital
Marietta turns the ball over 31 times

MARIETTA, Ohio – When playing one of the top team's in the nation, head coach Vicki Giffin knew that it would be important to take care of the basketball. On Wednesday (Dec. 7) evening, the Lady Pioneers struggled with turnovers and it resulted in a 62-41 loss to the sixth-ranked Crusaders on Fenton Court.

Marietta (3-5, 0-2 OAC) and Capital (7-0, 2-0 OAC) both started out slow, combining for 10 turnovers in the first five minutes. They were tied 6-6 before Lindsey Pfirman gave the Crusaders an 8-6 advantage with two free throws at the 12:08 mark. That sparked Capital, who went on to out score Marietta 21-11 during the remainder of the half.

Both teams shot 30 percent from the field, while Marietta had 17 turnovers and Capital had 13 in the first half.

Capital was able to extend its lead to as many as 23 points in the second half and cruised to a 62-41 victory.

Marietta finished with 31 turnovers in the game and finished 17-of-42 (.405) from the floor, including 3-of-11 (.273) from long range and 4-of-10 (.400) from the line in the loss.

The Crusaders shot 21-of-58 (.362) from the field, hit 3-of-14 (.214) from beyond the arc and knocked down 17-of-19 (.895) from the line, while committing 24 turnovers. Capital out rebounded Marietta 40-25.

Sophomore Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett), who entered as the OAC's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 20 points. Sophomore Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) added a team-high nine boards in the loss.

Capital was paced by senior Jennifer Lilly with 18 points and nine rebounds, while 2005 OAC Player of the Year Sara Heitkamp added 15 points and six steals and Jenna Algie pitched in with 10 points.

Marietta will look to get back on track Saturday (Dec. 10) when it travels to Ada for a 3 p.m. match-up with Ohio Northern.
