Lady Pioneers drop non conference road game to No. 21 Washington & Jefferson 77-49

Dec. 14, 2005
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Marietta College women’s basketball team took a break from its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) competition Wednesday (Dec. 14) evening to battle 21st-ranked Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) of the Presidents Athletic Conference. The Presidents used a balance of inside play and deep shooting to send the Lady Pioneers home in defeat, 77-49.

With the loss, Marietta’s fourth straight, it falls to 3-7 on the year, while Washington & Jefferson improves to 6-1. It was the Presidents’ fifth-straight victory.

The game featured both league’s leading scorers — Marietta’s Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and W & J’s Leigh Sulkowski. Both players led her respective team in scoring, as Pagenhardt finished with 17 points and Sulkowski had 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

It was the three-point shooting of the Presidents’ Dayna Greenfield that the Pioneers could not find an answer for Wednesday, as she nailed 5-of-7 from long range to finished with 17. As a team, Washington & Jefferson went 8-of-23 (.348) from beyond the arc and hit 30-of-65 (.462) from the field overall. Marietta finished 18-of-51 (.353) from the floor, including 2-of-11 (.182) from long range.

The Presidents dominated the board, out rebounding the Pioneers 52-26, including 20-6 on the offensive end. Washington & Jefferson finished with 16 turnovers compared to Marietta’s 14.

Starters Tabi Taylor (New Matamoras/Frontier) and Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) each added six points, while sophomore Nesha Nichols (Grand Rapids, Mich./Creston) added nine points off the bench for Marietta.

The Pioneers will return to action and OAC play Saturday (Dec. 17) when Wilmington visits Fenton Court for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
