Marietta women fall at home to Wilmington 87-51

MARIETTA, Ohio – Head Coach Vicki Giffin's Marietta College women's basketball team took the floor against Wilmington College Saturday (Dec. 17) in its final game before the holidays.
The Quakers (7-2, 3-1 OAC) proved to be too much for the struggling Lady Pioneers (3-8, 0-4 OAC), who have now lost five straight. Wilmington dominated all aspects of the game en route to an 87-51 victory.
Marietta started flat, allowing Wilmington to run out to a 16-4 lead six minutes into the game. Giffin benched her starting five in favor a some fresh players and those Pioneers used their hustle to climb back within six points, 25-19, with 8:15 to play in the half. The Quakers eventually built their lead back up to 18 points, 44-26, at intermission.
An Olivia Newsome (Jumping Branch, W. Va./Summers) lay-up to open the second half pulled Marietta within 16, but it never got any closer, as Wilmington wore down the young Pioneers over the final 20 minutes of the game.
As a team, Marietta finished 20-of-55 (.364) from the field, including 5-of-13 (.385) from beyond the arc. Wilmington went 36-of-73 (.493) from the floor and hit 5-of-14 (.357) from long range. The Quakers out rebounded the Pioneers 52-23, including 20-3 on the offensive end.
Wilmington's Katie Streck finished with a game-high 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Teammate Kelly Peters added 16 points in the win.
Marietta was paced by freshman Kortney Reed (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) with 13 points and three steals, while fellow classmate Sara Burns (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) contributed 12 points and three assists. In addition, sophomore Natalie Jackson (Circleville) finished with nine points.
The Pioneers will return to action after the holidays when they host Muskingum Wednesday (Jan 4) at 7:30 p.m. |
