Lady Pioneers begin 2006 with 66-61 victory over rival Muskies
Tad Secrest wins debut as interim head coach

MARIETTA, Ohio — A fresh start in 2006. That is what the Marietta College basketball team was looking for Wednesday (Jan. 4) when rival Muskingum visited Fenton Court for each team's first Ohio Athletic Conference showdown of the new year.
Interim head coach Tad Secrest and his Pioneers started off on the right foot with a 66-61 victory over the Muskies in Secrest's debut at the collegiate level. With the win, Marietta improves to 4-8 overall, 1-4 in the OAC, while Muskingum falls to 2-10, 0-5 in league play.
Marietta, who found a lot of success once calendar turned a year ago, finishing 8-7 during the 2005 portion of the 2004-05 season, got a team effort Wednesday.
Sophomore Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) paced Marietta with a game-high 25 points, 18 of which came in the second half.
Senior Tabi Taylor (New Matamoras/Frontier) added a double-double with 10 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, while also adding a season-best four steals.
Sophomore Abby Hess (Stow/Stow/Munroe Falls) added 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks, while sophomore Olivia Newsome (Jumping Branch, W. Va./Summers) finished with seven points and five assists in the win.
Muskingum was paced by Leah Miller with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Tapre Young also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, while Mindy Workman finished with 12 points in the loss.
Marietta will look to continue its momentum Saturday (Jan. 7) when it travels to University Heights to take on John Carroll at 3 p.m.
