MARIETTA, Ohio - The Notre Dame Falcons claimed the 2005 Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Classic with a 66-57 victory over host Marietta Sunday (Nov. 27) afternoon on Fenton Court.
Notre Dame's Jamie King finished with a double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds, to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Teammate Melisa Crook added 19 points, 10 boards and four steals in the win, which improved the Falcons' record to 5-1. Crook also earned All-Tournament Team recognition.
Marietta (2-3) was paced by sophomore Justine Pagenhardt with 23 points, while sophomore Abby Hess added six points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Both players were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Freshman Kortney Reed and Nesha Nichols contributed nine and eight points, respectively for Marietta.
The game remained tight throughout the first half, as both team had trouble with turnovers. The two teams entered the locker room with 14 turnovers each. Notre Dame, however, held a 29-23 advantage.
Marietta never game closer than five points in the final frame and Notre Dame went on to claim the title.
Overall, Notre Dame finished 25-of-58 (.431) from the floor, committed 26 turnovers and had 47 total rebounds in the win. Marietta, on the other hand, went 20-of-58 (.345) from the field and 0-7 from long range. The Pioneers finished with 32 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
Ohio Wesleyan (1-4) hit 15 three-pointers en route to a 80-58 victory over Chatham (Pa.) (1-5) in the Turkey Shoot consolation game.
Kathleen Cooper connected on 5-of-9 from beyond the arc and finished with 17 points, earning her All-Tournament recognition. Emily Lloyd and Rachel Messaros added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Chatham was led by All-Tournament Team honoree Liz Rizza, who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Chelsea Viti (14), Kristin Pollack (10) and Erica Bilski (10) all finished in double figures for the Cougars.

MARIETTA, Ohio - Marietta coach Vicki Giffin has been working hard early this season to get as many players experience as possible. She got just what she wanted in the opener of the 21st annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament as 13 Pioneers saw action.
Marietta College, which led by as many as 21 points, rolled to an 83-71 victory over Chatham (Pa.) College in front of 215 fans in Ban Johnson Arena Saturday night (Nov. 26).
Sophomore guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) paced the Pioneers with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while sophomore forward Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) had one of her finest outings with 15 points, six rebounds and six steals as the Pioneers improved to 2-2 on the young season.
The Pioneers jumped out to an 18-4 lead as Hess had four points, two steals, a block and one assist. Marietta built its first 21-point lead with 4:57 to play in the first half when Hess made a lay up on a nice pass from sophomore guard Olivia Newsome (Jumping Branch, WV/Summers).
Hess’ jumper 35 seconds later kept the Marietta lead at 21, and her basket at the 3:12 mark off another assist from Newsome gave the Pioneers their third 21-point lead of the half.
Marietta freshman guard Kortney Reed (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Cougars, who dropped to 1-3, closed the first half on a 6-0 run to cut the Marietta lead to 14. Liz Rizza had four of her game-high 25 points during the run. She also had six rebounds and four assists.
Marietta extended the lead to 21 points twice in the second half before Coach Giffin turned to her bench more in the final 10 minutes.
Freshman forward Sara Burns (Greenville), sophomore guard Natalie Jackson (Circleville) and freshman center Valerie Thomas (Hilliard/Davidson) each scored six points off the bench. Thomas added five rebounds, while freshman guard Stephanie Dowd (Willoughby/Willoughby South) had seven boards in nine minutes of action.
Erica Bilksi had 19 points for Chatham, while Hallie Arena chipped in with nine points, and Kristin Pollack had seven rebounds.
The second game of the evening pitted Notre Dame against Ohio Wesleyan. The Falcons (4-1) led by as many as 16 points early in the second half, but the Battling Bishops (0-4) fought back to pull within five points, 72-67, with under a minute to play. Notre Dame, however, hit four from the line to secure the 76-67 victory.
The Falcons' Jamie King led all scorers with 21 points and added eight rebounds, while teammates Christine Hastings and Cierra Malone added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Ohio Wesleyan was paced by Laurel Lawson with 11 points, while Kathleen Cooper added 10 points and Jamie Rea dished out five assists.
As a result of Saturday's action, Marietta faces Notre Dame in the championship at 3 p.m. Sunday, while Chatham plays in the consolation game against Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
