GREENVILLE, Pa. — A 13-6 run over the final four minutes
allowed host Thiel (Pa.) to escape with a 77-70 victory over
visiting Marietta College in women's collegiate basketball
action Tuesday (Nov. 21) night. [Box

The Pioneers (0-3) led by 13 points, 25-12, with nine minutes
to play in the first half, only for the Tomcats (2-1) to put
together another run to close the gap to one point, 28-27,
at intermission. Thiel completed the initial comeback by scoring
the first seven points of the second half to take a 34-28
lead. A three-pointer by junior Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe
Falls) gave the advantage, 45-42, back to the Pioneers with
14:06 remaining. Marietta held the lead until Thiel closed
the game with the game-clinching run.
The Pioneers shot 24-of-67 (.358) from the field and 8-of-22
(.364) from beyond the arc. The Tomcats converted 25-of-67
(.373) from the floor and 8-of-24 (.333) from long range.
Thiel out rebounded Marietta 49-42 in the game.
Junior Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern
Garrett) paced all Pioneer scorers with 24 points. Freshman
Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) added a double-double,
16 points and 15 rebounds. Hess pitched in with 12 points,
nine boards and five steals, while freshman Shawntae
Cline (Belpre) had 11 points and five assists.
Thiel was led by Nicole Valentino with 26
points, while Fontello Jones had 16 points
and 17 rebounds.
Marietta returns to action Saturday (Nov. 25) as part of
the 22nd
annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Classic. The Pioneers will
take on Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) in the second game
of the evening at 8 p.m. Marian (Ind.) and Myers match up
in the opener at 6 p.m.
