Marietta women's upset bid denied as No. 3 Baldwin-Wallace bounces back from halftime deficit to win 71-53
Hess and Beckett each finish in double figures for Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio — Head Coach Ted Eskildsen's young Marietta College women's basketball team had visiting third-ranked Baldwin-Wallace in shock as it entered intermission, but the Yellow Jackets showed their resiliency by controlling the second half en route to a 71-53 victory Saturday (Dec. 16) afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena. The win improved Baldwin-Wallace's record to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta, meanwhile, fell to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the Conference.

The Pioneers, who overcame 17 first-half turnovers by shooting 12-of-23 (.522) from the field, controlled the clock and the boards in the first 20 minutes to help them take a 32-28 lead at the half. Baldwin-Wallace committed 11 turnovers and shot 12-of-31 (.387) in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets made eight of their first 10 shots in the second half, including 5-of-5 from long range, to take a 10-point lead with 13:56 remaining. Baldwin-Wallace, who shot 14-of-28 (.500) from the field in the second stanza, extended its lead to 18 points as time expired.

Marietta finished the day 19-of-47 (.404) from the field, including 3-of-12 (.250) from beyond the arc to go along with 12-of-14 (.857) from the line. Baldwin-Wallace went 26-of-59 (.441) from the floor, 9-of-16 (.563) from long range and 10-of-17 (.588) from the charity stripe. It finished with a slight rebounding advantage, 34-32, and forced Marietta into 26 turnovers while committing 17 in the victory.

Junior Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) led Marietta with 13 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) added 12 points and seven boards. In addition, junior Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and sophomore Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) each had nine points.

Baldwin-Wallace was paced by Carly Flowers with 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and five assists. Sandra Busser came off the bench to contribute 13 points, while Marietta native Stacia Shrider finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Pioneers will return to action Thursday (Dec. 21) when they take on DeSales (Pa.) in Las Vegas, Nev., at 11 a.m. PST.
