No. 5 Quakers too much for Lady Pioneers; Marietta falls 64-34

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team showed its character Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon in a 64-34 loss to visiting Wilmington College. The loss was the Pioneers' eighth in a row overall and drops their record to 2-17, 0-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference The Quakers improve to 17-2, 11-1 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Marietta, coming off its worst scoring output in 28 years, battled for 40 minutes against fifth-ranked Wilmington, who rebounded nicely from its first loss in Conference Wednesday.

The Quakers came out of the gate to open a 9-0 lead before a jumper by junior Natalie Jackson (Circleville) gave the Pioneers their first points at the 14:11 mark of the first half. By the end of the frame, Wilmington had already built a 36-14 advantage.

The first basket of the second stanza was a memorable one for Wilmington's Kelly Peters, as she scored her 1,000th career-point 89 seconds into the half.

Marietta finished 13-of-56 (.232) from the field, including 1-of-16 (.063) from three-point range. It connected on 7-of-10 (.700) from the free throw line and turned the ball over 17 times, leading directly to 15 Quaker points. Wilmington shot 27-of-57 (.474) from in the game, including 5-of-10 (.500) from deep. The Quakers added 5-of-12 (.417) from the line and had 15 turnovers in the game, which led to 10 Pioneer points. Wilmington won the battle of the boards, 41-36.

Junior guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) paced Marietta with 13 points, finishing 5-of-17 from the field. Freshman Jen Wolfe (Ravenswood, W.Va.) came off the bench to contribute nine points, while junior Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and freshman Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) each pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Wilmington was led by Peters' 16 points and got 10 from Katie Streck. Peters also finished with a team-best seven boards.

Marietta returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 31) when it travels to Columbus to take on Capital at 7:30 p.m.
