Pagenhardt joins 1,000-point club in Marietta College's 57-45 loss to Heidelberg College
Second-half struggles erase halftime lead

MARIETTA, Ohio — Junior guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) scored her 1,000th career point in front of a Parents and Foster Parents' Day crowd Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon, but Marietta College once again came out on the short end of an Ohio Athletic Conference battle with Heidelberg College, losing 57-45. The loss, the Pioneers' 10th straight overall, drops their record to 2-19, 0-14 in the OAC. The Student Princes improve to 11-10, 4-10 in the league.
Pagenhardt entered needing 17 points to reach 1,000 and join six other Marietta women's basketball players in the exclusive club. The guard scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to help the Pioneers take a 31-28 advantage into the locker room. Pagenhardt, added a three-pointer early in the second half and then split a pair from the line with 12:07 to play in the game to collect her 1,000th point. Pagenhardt (1,004 points) now joins Cathy Clark (2,311), Lisa Wagner (1,818), Kim Brown (1,568), Libby McCandlish (1,283), Brenda Brdicka (1,109) and April Smith (1,017) in Marietta's 1,000-point club.
Freshman Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) added her sixth double-double of the year, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 40 minutes. Only three other Pioneers scored in the game; junior Abby Hess (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) had seven points, freshman Tara Poling added three points and sophomore Lyncee Perkey scored two points.
Overall, Marietta finished 13-of-37 (.351) from the floor, 5-of-22 (.227) from long range and 14-of-20 (.700) from the line. The Pioneers turned the ball over 17 times and forced the Student Princes into eight turnovers. Heidelberg, who out scored Marietta 29-14 in the second stanza, shot 17-of-53 (.321) from the field, 4-of-13 (.308) from beyond the arc and 19-of-25 (.760) from the charity stripe. It also won the battle of the boards, 35-31.
Three Student Princes finished in double figures. Maureen Hunter paced the team with 15 points, while Amanda Campbell and Stacey Richard each had 10 points.
Marietta remains at home for its next game, a Wednesday (Feb. 7) evening match-up with rival Muskingum. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. |
