Marietta women fall to Maryville in consolation game of Mount St. Joseph Tournament
Driscoll scores a career-high 21 points in loss

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team fell to Maryville (Tenn.) College 79-60 in the consolation game of the College of Mount St. Joseph Tip-off Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 22) afternoon. The loss dropped the Pioneers’ record to 1-2, while the Scots improved to 1-2 on the year.
It was a tale of two halves in Saturday’s game. Marietta shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the field in the first half to help it take an early lead. Maryville responded by shooting 67.7% (21-of-31) in the final period to help it overcome the early deficit and cruise to a 19-point victory.
Marietta hit six of its first 10 shots and opened the game with a 13-4 run over the first seven minutes of action. The Pioneers extended their lead to 11 points, 30-19, with 4:21 remaining in the half. Maryville, however, closed the half with a 7-0 run to pull within four points, 30-26, at intermission.
The Scots continued their run by scoring the first 14 points of the second half to take a 40-30 advantage with 17 minutes to play in the game. Marietta cut the lead to five, 51-46, at the midway point of the period, but Maryville closed the game with another run to cruise to the 79-60 victory.
Marietta finished the game by shooting 24-of-47 (.511) from the field, including 3-of-9 (.333) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers, who were out rebounded 28-25, added 9-of-16 (.563) from the line. Maryville shot 31-of-57 (.544) from the floor, hitting 4-of-9 (.444) from long range. The Scots added 13-of-19 (.684) from the free throw line. Marietta turned the ball over 27 times, which led to 21 points. The Pioneers, meanwhile, scored 12 points on 13 Scots turnovers.
Senior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire), who finished 7-of-17 from the field, scored a career-high 21 points to lead Marietta’s offense. Freshmen post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added 12 points, while senior wing Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) contributed eight points and junior post Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) had seven points and eight boards in the loss. In addition, Carraher became Marietta's all-time leader in three-point field goal attempts on Saturday as she increased her career total to 384 three-point field goal attempts, which broke Justine Pagenhardt's record of 380, set just last season.
Maryville had four players score in double figures in the win. Jenna Dalton led the way with 16 points, while Natalie Munday had 15 points and seven rebounds. Alicia Brown and Alexis Rouvelas added 14 points and 12 points, respectively.
Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Nov. 29) evening when the Pioneers open their 24th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament with a 6 p.m. match-up against Hiram College.
