Carraher breaks career three-point record in 72-59 loss to Wilmington

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior wing Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) etched her name into another place in the Pioneers' record book during a 72-59 loss to visiting Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe Wilmington College on Saturday (Dec. 13) afternoon inside Ban Johnson Arena. The loss dropped Marietta's record to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. Wilmington improved to 6-1, 2-1 in league play.
Carraher, who was already the Pioneers' single-game and single-season three-point record holder, entered the game tied for first place on Marietta's all-time three-point field goals list. She broke the record midway through the first half when she hit her 130th career three, putting Marietta ahead 18-16 at the time. Carraher, who added another three-pointer later in the half, finished with a game-high 17 points. It was the third time in four games that she finished with 17 points.
Three other Pioneer players joined Carraher in double figures. Freshman post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) had 15 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) added 12 points and five assists. In addition, junior post Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) added 11 points and nine rebounds for Marietta, who dressed just seven players due to injuries for the third straight game.
Wilmington also had four players score double figures on Saturday. Kortney Kin matched Carraher with 17 points to go along with a game-high 10 boards. Allie Meranda added 13 points, while Claire Brown and Ashley Leon both contributed 10 points in the win.
Both teams got off to a slow start on Fenton Court and neither team led by more than six points in the half, which saw the lead change 16 different times. Marietta's final advantage came after Carraher scored a fast break layup to put her squad ahead 22-20 with 5:09 to play in the half. Wilmington closed the half on a 11-5 run to take a 31-27 lead into the locker room.
Marietta scored the first four points of the second half to knot the game at 31-31 with 18:29 remaining. From there, Wilmington's offense got on track and it was able to wear down Marietta, pushing the lead to as many as 19 points. The Pioneers closed the game on a 7-1 run to make the final score 72-59.
The Pioneers finished the game by shooting 22-of-63 (.349) from the floor, including 4-of-16 (.250) from beyond the arc. Marietta, who had 17 turnovers, added 11-of-17 (.647) from the line. Wilmington shot 28-of-62 (.453) from the field, including 4-of-15 (.267) from three-point range. The Quakers, who added 12-of-22 (.545) from the line, overcame 21 turnovers and out rebounded the Pioneers 49-34 on the day.
Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Dec. 16) evening when it travels to Bethany, W.Va., for a match-up with the Bison at 7 p.m. |
