Marietta women fall to Capital 81-55 in return from 14-day layoff

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Junior post Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) scored a season-high 20 points, but the Marietta College women’s basketball team dropped an 81-55 road decision to host Capital University on Saturday (Jan. 3) evening. The Pioneers, who returned to action after a 14-day layoff, fell to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders improved to 7-2, 4-0 in the OAC.
Marietta, who never led, managed to stay within reach of Capital for the first eight minutes of the game. The Pioneers stayed within five points until a layup by Lindsey Watt gave the Crusaders a 16-9 advantage with 11:48 remaining in the half. From there, Capital closed the period on 26-16 run to enter halftime on top 42-25.
The Pioneers never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way and the lead grew to as many as 36 before Capital left the court with an 81-55 win.
Beckett, who played 37 minutes, finished 6-of-9 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line to account for her 20 points, which was just two shy of matching her career high. No other Marietta player reached double figures. Senior wing Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) was the next highest scorer; she finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds and seven assists without a turnover in 39 minutes. Senior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire), freshman wing Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) and freshman wing Jamie Thomas (Gahanna) all added six points in the loss.
Kristen Richardson paced Capital with a game-best 22 points while adding seven rebounds. Caitlin Elsass added 14 points, while Hillary Kuhns had nine points and Abbey Winland contributed eight points.
Marietta finished the game by shooting 40.4% (19-of-47) from the field, including 21.4% (3-of-14) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers, who added 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the free throw line, had 24 turnovers, which led to 28 Capital points and were out-rebounded 47-26. The Crusaders shot 47.4% (36-of-76) from the floor, hit 10.0% (1-of-10) from three-point range and connected on 66.7% (8-of-12) from the charity stripe. Capital overcame 15 turnovers in the win.
