Senior NIkki Driscoll scored 17 point in the loss

Jan. 24, 2009
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team overcame an 18-point second half deficit only to fall, 72-63, in overtime to the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena.

Senior Amanda Carraher’s (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) layup tied the score, 59-59, with 26 seconds to play in regulation. Carraher was fouled on the play, but missed the go-ahead free throw that would have put the Pioneers on top by one. The Pioneers, however, managed to stop the Polar Bears on their next possession to send the game into overtime. The Polar Bears outscored the Pioneers 13-4 in the extra stanza to escape with the 72-63 victory.

The loss dropped Marietta’s overall record to 2-15 and 0-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Ohio Northern improved to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the OAC.

Senior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) led the Pioneers with 17 points and five assists. Carraher followed with 15 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) came off the bench to score 13 points and collect seven rebounds. Freshman Lizz Wilson (Ashtabula/Edgewood) added eight points and five boards, while junior Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) led all players with 11 rebounds and had six points.

Alisha Rinehart led Ohio Northern with 22 points and seven rebounds. Emily Culbertson scored 19 points, while Erica Schoenberger chipped in with 12 points for the Polar Bears.

For the game, Marietta finished 22-of-61 (.361) from the field, 7-of-22 (.318) from behind the arc and 12-of-16 (.750) from the free throw line. Ohio Northern shot 24-of-60 (.400) from the field, 7-of-18 (.389) from three-point range and 17-of-22 (.773) from the free throw line. Marietta out-rebounded the Polar Bears 43-40, but lost the turnover battle, committing 17 to Ohio Northern’s 14.

The Pioneers will travel to Otterbein on Wednesday (Jan. 28) night. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
