All fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness

Feb. 11, 2009
MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College is partnering with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to host a pair of Pink Zone basketball game during its final two home dates of the 2009 season. In an effort to increase breast cancer awareness, the Pioneers are working to raise money for the Kay Yow/WBCA Breast Cancer Fund.

The Pink Zone games will take place against John Carroll University on Feb. 14 and Baldwin-Wallace College on Feb. 21. Both games will tip-off inside Ban Johnson Arena at 3 p.m.

All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the games to show their support for breast cancer awareness. The Pioneers, like all other Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) teams during the week of Feb. 13-22, will be wearing pink shirts in place of their warm-ups. Marietta will also be dressed in its pink socks for the second straight season.

The WBCA Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.
