Penn State-Beaver tops Hiram 73-67 in consolation game

MARIETTA, Ohio — Allegheny College captured the 24th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament title on Sunday (Nov. 30) afternoon by defeating host Marietta College 64-53 in the championship game at Ban Johnson Arena. Earlier in the day, Penn State University-Beaver claimed the consolation game by beating Hiram College 73-67.

Allegheny 64, Marietta 53
Allegheny College kept a handle on Marietta’s top two scorers en route to defeating the Lady Pioneers 64-53 in Sunday’s Championship game of the 24th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot. The Lady Gators, who won their first Turkey Shoot crown, held the senior guard tandem of Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) and Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) to a combined 12 points after the dup attributed for 43 of the Pioneers’ 78 points in their first round win over Hiram College. The victory improved Allegheny’s record to 3-2 on the year, while Marietta fell to 2-3.
Freshman post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) carried the load for Marietta with 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior post Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds on her way to earning All-Tournament Team honors. Carraher and freshman Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) both scored nine points in the loss. Carraher joined Beckett on the All-Tournament team.
Tournament MVP Jill Gregory led Allegheny with 15 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Guard Hilary Collins added 13 points and Emilie Simone, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored 12 to go along with seven boards. Stephanie Wolf also contributed nine points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Marietta jumped out to an early four-point lead in the first two minutes of the game. Allegheny came back and took the lead for good after and Collins three-pointer to put the Gators up one, 13-12, at the 12:34 mark of the first half. The Pioneers stayed close and trailed by only two, 29-27, at the half. Allegheny stretched its lead to 11 points, 48-37, in the second half with 8:51 remaining. Marietta cut the deficit to six, 48-42 and 58-52, but could get no closer as the Gators converted at the free throw line down the stretch to post the 11-point victory.
Both teams struggled scoring from the field throughout the game. Marietta finished 18-of-53 (.340) from the field, 1-of-9 (.111) from behind the arc and 16-of-24 (.667) from the free throw line. Allegheny finished 22-of-63 (.349) from the field, 4-of-9 (.444) from three-point range and 16-of-24 (.667) from the free throw line. The Gators held the edge in rebounding 45-40 and committed 18 turnovers compared to Marietta’s 23.
Marietta is back in action Wednesday (Dec. 3) night at Denison. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Penn State-Beaver 73, Hiram 67
Penn State University-Beaver downed Hiram College 73-67 to win the consolation game of the 24th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot. With the win, the Lions improved to 2-3, while the Terriers fell to 1-4 on the year.
The Lions were led by All-Tournament selection Heather Sandusky, who finished with 26 points and seven rebounds. Jasmine Green also scored 13 points and grabbed 11 boards in the win.
Caitlyn Ruese paced the Terriers with 16 points and 11 rebounds, earning her a spot on the Turkey Shoot All-Tournament Team. Karris Kandel also scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the loss.
The Lions finished 25-of-60 (.417) from the field, 6-of-12 (.500) from three-point range and 17-of-31 (.548) from the free throw line. Hiram went 26-of-71 (.366) from the field, 6-of-17 (.353) from three-point range and 9-of-17 (.529) from the free throw line. The Lions out rebounded the Terriers 47-46. Both teams committed 20 turnovers.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College rolled past Hiram College, 78-56, and Allegheny College held off Penn State University-Beaver, 77-67, in the first round of the 24th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Saturday (Nov. 29) evening at Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers and the Gators will battle for the championship Sunday (Nov. 30) afternoon at 3 p.m. Hiram and Penn State-Beaver will play for the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Marietta 78, Hiram 56
Marietta College defeated the Hiram College Terriers 78-56 in the first round of the 24th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Saturday (Nov. 29) night at Fenton Court. The win improved the Lady Pioneers record to 2-2 while the Terriers fell to 1-1.
Marietta was led by senior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) with a game-high 25 points and six assists. Fellow senior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) finished with 18 points and added four assists. Junior Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Freshman Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) added eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.
Brittany Mayle led Hiram with 16 points and four rebounds. Alex Dellas added nine points and five rebounds off the bench. Caitlyn Ruese led the Terriers in rebounding with eight.
The Pioneers jumped all over the Terriers from the start. Marietta would double up Hiram 20-10 in the first nine minutes of play and would not look back as the lead remained in double digits for the rest of the game. The Pioneers, backed by some shooting from Driscoll and Carraher, stretched their lead to 16 points, 39-24, at the half. Marietta led by as many 25 in the second half as it cruised to the 78-56 victory.
Marietta finished the game 27-of-61 (.443) from the field, 6-of-12 (.500) from three-point range and 18-of-24 (.750) from the free throw line. Hiram finished 19-of-57 (.333) from the field, 2-of-11 (.182) from beyond the arc and 16-of-21 (.762) from the free throw line. Marietta held in the edge in rebounding, 45-33, and in turnovers, 19-20.

Britni Mohney led four double-digit scorers for Allegheny with 17 points. Emilie Simone added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Stephanie Wolf chipped in 14 points and Hilary Collins added 12 in the win.
Heather Sandusky and Jasmine Green each scored 22 points in the loss. Green also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Shelby Parks added 10 points for the Lions.
Allegheny finished 32-of-68 (.471) from the field, 2-of-11 (.182) from three-point range and 11-of-15 (.733) from the free throw line. Penn State-Beaver finished 27-of-66 (.409) from the field, 1-of-7 (.143) from long range and 12-of-20 (.600) from the free throw line. The Gators out rebounded the Lions 44-37. |
