Women's rowing takes bronze at Shore Boys Regatta

Oct. 3, 2004
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - Women's Rowing coach Karen Glowacki and her Varsity Eight finished in third place this Sunday (Oct. 3) at the first Shore Boys Regatta in the back bays of Atlantic City and Ventnor.

Over 150 men and women rowers from Drexel University, Lehigh University, and Marietta College raced a 2.8 mile head race and a 1,000 meter sprint race. All three schools are coached by former local high school oarsmen: Drexel's - Lou Renzulli (Holy Spirit), Lehigh's - Paul Savell (Holy Spirit), and Marietta's - John Bancheri (Atlantic City).

Drexel's top shell won both the head race (16:00) and the sprint race (4:19) to take the top spot overall (33:16). Lehigh's #1 boat came in second overall (33:34) by way of a third place finish in the head race (16:10) and runner-up finish in the sprint (4:21).

The Pioneers sat in second place (16:04) after the head race, finishing just four seconds behind Drexel. Marietta raced out to an early lead in the sprint, but could not keep up the pace, eventually falling to third (4:29). Its overall time was 34:00. The overall mark was found by multiplying the sprint time by four and then adding it to the head race time.

"We are very pleased with out effort," said Glowacki. "Finishing four seconds back of Drexel after just four days together is very exciting. With some more time on the water as a unit, we will be looking for a fast time at the HOC (Head of the Charles) in Boston in a couple weeks."

The V8 sits from bow Megan Rogers (Allison Park, PA), Meg Foraker (New Lexington), Corrine Mees (Oxford), Amanda Stoner (Toledo), Becca Stewart (Indiana, PA), Rosa Hanks (Raleigh, NC), Dorothy Klaiber (Toledo), stroke Lindsay Letterle (Glenshaw, PA) and coxswain Meredith Rogers (Allison Park, PA).

Marietta's Varsity Eight will head to Boston (Oct. 23-24) for the Head of The Charles, one of the most competitive regattas of the fall.
