Glowacki pleased with Lady Pioneers' effort at Stonehurst Invitational Regatta

Oct. 9, 2005
ROCHESTER, NY - Each fall brings a new sense of excitement to head coach Karen Glowacki and the Marietta College women's rowing program. The Lady Pioneers, coming off a successful 2005 spring season, are eager to make the 2006 campaign even more memorable.

In order to do so, the team indulges itself into a rigorous fall training program that spends much of its time on technique and continuity.

The Lady Pioneers got their first chance to gauge how that practice paid off Sunday (Oct. 9) when they competed in the Stonehurst Invitational Regatta, raced on the Genesse River in Rochester, NY.

The event draws some of North America's finest to Rochester for the annual event, which stages a three-mile headrace in the morning and then 1500-meter sprints in the afternoon. Marietta made a return trip to the regatta after not attending in 2004.

Marietta entered a Varsity Eight and JV Eight boat into the collegiate portion of the Sunday competition.

"Both crews raced solidly this weekend," said Glowacki. "I believe we could have gone faster, but for our first race against outside competition, we performed well."

The Varsity Eight, which sat from bow Anjouli Dapice, Meg Foraker, Kim Becker, Corinne Mees, DeeDee Wilkey, Brittany Durand, Amanda Chunderewicz, stroke Lindsay Letterle and coxswain Meredith Rogers, improved upon their 2003 finish of tenth place placing seventh this year.

The Junior Varsity Eight, which is comprised of bow Claire Berlin, Krista Tkacz, Shauna Payne, Jenny Sayles, Laurel Lindamood, Gwen Chamberlain, Kristen Bird, stroke Sarah Henry and coxswain Saira Khan, rowed to a 20th place finish in the same event as the varsity shell.

"Overall, Emily (Crandall) and I were pleased with our performance, particularly the way the ladies went after it in the afternoon sprints."

Marietta will now return to the waters of the Muskingum to apply what it learned Sunday in hopes of making the proper adjustments to help the Pioneers achieve their goals later this spring.
