2007 Marietta College women's rowing preview
Lady Pioneers looking to continue its climb up NCAA Division III ladder
March 13, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's rowing program is looking to have another successful season on the water in 2007. The Pioneers are poised to continue its development as a program with the goal of earning a bid to the NCAA Division III Championships at the end of the year.
"The team has been extremely motivated for the spring season," said Head Coach Karen Glowacki. "The ladies are responding well to a newly-revised training program and they are looking forward to working on some of the preparations for the racing season during its week on Canal 54."
Marietta spent the last month working through a weekly regiment that included six rows, two lifts and three extra ergometer workouts. Veterans Kim Becker (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.), Anjouli Dapice (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic), Brittany Durand (Danielson, Conn./Pomfret), Amy Epling (Parkersburg, W.Va.), Meg Foraker (New Lexington/Culver Academy), Meredith Hay (Berwick, ME/Marshwood)), Jenny Sayles (Lakewood) and Krista Tkacz (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) have done a good job of mentoring the rookies.
This season has brought a change in Division III women's rowing. The Mid-Atlantic Division III Championship Regatta, formerly the ACLS regatta, is now a regional qualifying race for the NCAA Championships. There is also an opportunity for an at-large bid in the Varsity 8+ category.
"The new setup provides extra incentive for the girls as they face racing season," Glowacki said. "A solid season's performance, coupled with a strong standing at the Mid-Atlantic Championship, could provide us with an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship."
The Pioneers are spending this week (March 9-18) training on Canal 54 in Palm Bay, Florida. Marietta will cap off the week with the FIT Invitational Saturday (March 17).
Once back from Florida, Marietta will travel to the MC/Purdue Challenge Cup in West Lafayette, Indiana, March 24. The Pioneers’ lone home race will be the Marietta Invitational on March 31. Marietta will then make its way to the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J. (April 14-15), the Mid-Atlantic D-III Championships in Rossville, Pennsylvania (April 18) and the ECAC Championships in Worchester, Massachusetts (May 12-13), before hopefully earning a bid to the NCAA D-III Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee (May 25-27). |
