MC Soccer bounces back with 1-0 win over Shawnee State

Sept. 28, 2004

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Coach Pat Holguin was anxious to see how his squad would respond Tuesday (Sept. 28) against Shawnee State after suffering its first loss in three weeks over the weekend. He was not disappointed, as Marietta returned to form with a 1-0 victory over the Bears.

The Pioneers (7-2) broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute when freshman midfielderAllison Knowles (Wakeman) assisted sophomore midfielder Jill Sorboro (Cuyahoga Falls) with her second goal of the fall.

Junior Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario) and the defense took care of the rest, as Marietta won for the seventh time in nine chances. All of its wins have been by shutout. Blahnik collected 10 saves in the victory.

This was the final tune-up before Ohio Athletic Conference play for the Lady Pioneers, as they travel to Ada Saturday (Oct. 2) to begin their quest for an OAC title. Game time has been moved to 1 p.m. and will be part of a doubleheader. The men's teams will battle each other at 3 p.m.
