Pioneers upset Wilmington 1-0 in women's soccer

Oct. 5, 2004
MARIETTA, Ohio - The Pioneer women's soccer team picked up its biggest victory of the year Tuesday night (Oct. 5), knocking off the four-time defending OAC champion Wilmington Quakers 1-0 at Don Drumm Stadium.

Marietta (8-3, 1-1 OAC) withstood the Quakers' (8-4, 1-1 OAC) offensive attack and Emily Knowlton (Marietta) scored her first goal of the fall in the 59th minute to propel the Pioneers to the 1-0 victory. Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) picked up the assist, her fourth of the season.

Wilmington out shot the Pioneers 20-6 in the loss. Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario) made eight saves in route to her eighth shutout of the season. Krista Kalkhoff (Hamilton/Lakota West) had two saves, including one a penalty kick from Amy Lehosit (Pickerington) with 17:00 to play to keep the Quakers within one goal. Marietta's defense however, held strong down the stretch to assure the win.

"This is a great win for the ladies," said coach Pat Holguin. "They bounced back after a tough loss to (Ohio) Northern Saturday. Wilmington is a great team and our ladies saw that we could hang right with one of the best in the region."

Wilmington indeed is one of the top teams in the Conference and in the Great Lakes Region. The Quakers lost just the fifth OAC game since joining the league in 2000.

Marietta will look to carry this momentum into Saturday's game at Heidelberg. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. The men will battle at 1 p.m.
