Lady Pioneers shutout Lakeland (WI) 3-0 in season debut
Will play for Championship tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Sept. 3, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio – Head coach Patrick Holguin has to be very pleased with the result of his Lady Pioneers first contest of the 2005 season. Marietta picked up right where it left off, shutting out visiting Lakeland (WI) 3-0 on the first game ever played on the new Marietta Field.
The Pioneers, who set a school record with 11 shutouts in 2004, picked up their first of the 2005 campaign. Senior Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario) faced 13 shots and made eight saves en route to her 21st career shutout. She is now just two behind MC's career leader Jenny Fleischer, who had 23 between 1996 and 1999.
Blahnik got plenty of support from her fellow seniors, as all three goals were scored by a senior athlete.
Emily Knowlton (Marietta) scored the first goal of the game and on the new field with a shot beyond the 18' line that snuck in the top right of the goal with 31:25 to go in the first half.
Kristen Drain (Point Pleasant, WV) fired a shot in the exact same place less than three minutes later to give Marietta a 2-0 advantage.
Amy Lehosit (Pickerington) capped the scoring 30 seconds after Drain's goal with a score on a penalty kick. The goal was Lehosit's 21 of her career, which ranks second all-time at MC. It was also her 64th career point.
As a team, Marietta out shot the Muskies 25-13 in the victory. Alli Weiss suffered the loss for Lakeland, making 10 saves.
Marietta will return to action Sunday morning at 11 a.m. against the winner of the St. Mary's (IN) versus SUNY-Brockport game later this afternoon. Lakeland will battle the loser at 9 a.m.
