Women win 1-0 to claim MC Classic title

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Lady Pioneers soccer team proved once again at the 2005 MC Classic that defense wins games.

Head coach Pat Holguin knows that if his team can score at least one goal, his defense will give Marietta an opportunity to win. Today, freshman Melissa Schulte (Pemberville/Eastwood) scored her first collegiate goal and it was good enough for a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's (IN) in the championship game of Marietta's annual opening weekend soccer tournament Sunday (Sept. 4).

Led by senior goal keeper Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario), the Lady Pioneers posted their second straight shutout of the season. For Blahnik, who finished with six saves, it was her 22nd career shutout, moving her one shy of the school record.

Senior Amy Lehosit (Pickerington) picked up an assist on the goal, which was scored with 9:35 left to play in the first half. Lehosit increased school-record career assist total to 23 on Sunday.

Marietta's Kristen Drain (Point Pleasant, WV) and Allison Williams (Fisher, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) joined Blahnik and Lehosit on the All-Tournament Team.

Earlier in the morning, Lakeland (WI) and SUNY-Brockport played to a 0-0 tie in the consolation game of the tournament.

Marietta will return to action Thursday (Sept. 8) when it travels to Charleston, WV to take on the University of Charleston at 6 p.m.
