Wild play leads MC women to 2-1 victory over Charleston
Lady Pioneers extend win streak to three games
Sept. 8, 2005
CHARLESTON, WV – A goal is a goal. That is how head coach Patrick Holguin described the game winning play Thursday (Sept. 8) evening in Marietta's 2-1 victory over host Charleston (WV).
The Pioneers (3-0) found themselves tied 1-1 with 29 minutes to play in the game, when Charleston's goal keeper Kelly Guglietta attempted to clear a ball inside her own 18. Marietta freshman Melissa Schulte (Pemberville,/Eastwood), however, blocked the ball with her stomach and it bounced into the back of the net, giving the Pioneers the go ahead score.
Marietta jumped out to a one goal advantage in the 12th minute when freshman Allison Williams (Fisgers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) scored off an assist from freshman Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat). The goal was Williams' first of the year.
The Golden Eagles fought back to tie the score with 39 minutes to go in the contest when Andrea Cooper connected on a corner kick pass from Michelle Baird that got past a diving Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario). It was the first goal Blahnik allowed on the season. The senior finished with four saves, all in the first half.
Marietta was out shot 11-10 in the victory, but control the ball for most of the game.
The Lady Pioneers return to action Saturday (Sept. 10) when they battle Juniata (PA) at 9 a.m. in the opening round of the Lions Challenge Tournament, hosted by Penn State-Altoona.
