Lady Pioneers claim Lion Inviational with shoot out victory
Marietta officially ties SUNY-Buffalo 1-1, but wins 4-3 in shoot out

Sept. 11, 2005
ALTOONA, PA – The Marietta College women's soccer team remained undefeated following a 1-1 tie with SUNY-Buffalo Sunday (Sept. 11) in the championship game of the Lion Invitational, hosted by Penn State-Altoona.

The Lady Pioneers (4-0-1) and the Bengals could not settle the championship after two overtime periods, so the two teams went to a shoot out to determine the 2005 tournament champion. Marietta won the shoot out 4-3 to claim the tournament crown for the second straight season.

SUNY-Buffalo (4-0-1) took an early lead with a goal in the 26th minute and entered intermission with a one goal advantage.

Marietta, however, tied the score in the 49th minute when freshman Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) beat the Bengal keeper for her second goal of the season.

Senior Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario), who tied the school record for career shutouts with her 23rd Saturday against Juniata (PA), made three saves against SUNY-Buffalo. The school's all-time leader in victores (28) was named the MVP of the tournament.

Joining Blahnik on the All-Tournament squad were seniors Amy Lehosit (Pickerington) and Emilee Knowlton (Marietta), as well as sophomore Jennifer Wickerham (Massillon/Jackson).

Marietta will return to action Wednesday (Sept. 14) when it plays host to Oberlin in a 4:30 p.m. non conference match up at Marietta Field.
