Three first half goals propel Marietta past Oberlin 3-2

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team picked up its fifth win of the season Wednesday (Sept. 14), defeating visiting Oberlin 3-2 at Marietta Field.
The Lady Pioneers (5-0-1) got on the board in the 12th minute when junior Emilee Knowlton (Marietta) drove a pass from senior Amy Lehosit (Pickerington) over the left shoulder of the Oberlin keeper for her second goal of the season. The assist was Lehosit's second of the year.
Freshman Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) put Marietta ahead 2-0 with a goal off an assist from junior Jill Sorboro (Cuyahoga Falls) in the 31st minute. It was the third straight contest that Martinez has scored a goal.
Oberlin pulled within one goal with 10:40 to play in the half when Leah Bellow-Handelman got a shot past MC's Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario).
Junior Dana Donchess (Poland/Poland Seminary) scored the Lady Pioneers' final goal of the game with 6:09 remaining in the half when her shot bounced off the keeper and into the back of the net.
Oberlin was able to score a goal late in the second half off a free kick, but Marietta's defense held on for the 3-2 victory.
Blahnik finished with five saves and improved to 40-16-2 in her career.
Marietta will return to action Saturday (Sept. 17) when Ohio Valley comes to Marietta Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
