Blahnik sets career shutout record in Pioneers' 5-0 win over Ohio Valley

Sept. 17, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio – A combination of solid defense and agressive offense led the Marietta College women's soccer team to a lopsided 5-0 victory over Ohio Valley (WV) Saturday (Sept. 17). The win improved the Pioneers record to 6-0-1 on the season.

It was a memorable afternoon for everyone involved, but especially senior Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario), who became Marietta's all-time shutout leader with her 24th career shutout. Blahnik was not forced to make a save all day, as Ohio Valley did not get off a shot, en route to her 41st career win.

Junior Jill Sorboro (Cuyahoga Falls), who has been limited early in the season due to an injury, played a major role in the success of the offense Saturday, finishing with two goals and two assists.

Sophomore Vanessa Nicholls (Cornwall, ONT, Canada) got MC on the board in the 10th minute of the game when her header, which came off a pass from Sorboro, found the back of the net .

Sorboro accounted for the next goal with 21:17 to play in the half when she scored after a pass from senior Amy Lehosit (Pickerington).

Lehosit followed 16 minutes later with her first goal of the game and Marietta entered the half with a 3-0 lead.

Following a short intermission, Sorboro, assisted by senior Emilee Knowlton (Marietta), scored her second goal of the game to put MC ahead 4-0.

Lehosit capped the scoring with 34 minutes remaining in the contest. Sorboro was credited with another assist on the play.

Overall, the Lady Pioneers collected 42 shots in the win.

Marietta will return to action Tuesday (Sept. 20) when it travels to Rio Grande for a 4 p.m. contest.
