Lady Pioneers improve record to 7-0-1 with 3-0 victory at Rio Grande

Sept. 20, 2005
RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Rio Grande head coach Amber Oliver knew that she had her hands full Tuesday (Sept. 20) when the Lady Pioneers women's soccer team came to town. Oliver, a 2002 graduate of Marietta College, was a former standout under MC head coach Pat Holguin.

Oliver saw first-hand the progress that the Lady Pioneers have made since she helped lay the foundation for success just a few years ago. Marietta (7-0-1) used its defense to control the game until its offense could crack the scoreboard, something MC did three times in the second half. The result was the Pioneers' third straight win and seventh overall without a loss.

Senior Kristen Drain (Point Pleasant, WV) scored the first goal with 38:17 to go in the second frame. For Drain, it was her second of the year.

Sophomore Kelly Lehosit (Pickerington) made the score 2-0 less than three minutes later with her first goal of the season. It came off an assist from junior Jill Sorboro (Cuyahoga Falls), her fourth of the fall.

Sophomore Kileen Lehman (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) scored the final goal with 4:11 to play, giving Marietta a 3-0 victory.

The Pioneers out shot Rio 19-5 in the win. Senior goal keeper Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario) collected four saves, en route to her fifth shutout of the season.

Marietta will return to action Saturday (Sept. 24) when it takes on Bluffton at 1 p.m. The game is part of a men and women's doubleheader against the Beavers at Marietta Field. The men will follow at 3 p.m.
